In a recent seminar we looked at what makes an experimental film. We looked at historical ones and also contemporary ones. One of the historical experimental films is called An Optical Poem by Oskar Fishchinger.
I quite liked this one, in the way that it was in time with the music was effective. In some ways it reminded me of Disney's Fantasia in the way that it seems to portray the music through the motion of the visuals.
Another of the historical experimental films is Ballet Mecanique by Fernand Leger. This one was less to my taste, as I found the music to it almost stressful and hard to listen to, which may or may not have been Leger's intention. Despite this, visually it made to be a very interesting watch.
After viewing these experimental films, it has given me an idea as to what direction I believe my group and I should head in. Without a narrative, it might be fun to try and fit the moving image in with the soundtrack in a way that is almost like music. It might be hard to create a sound track that is completely in time but I think if it was done well it would work.
